What Justen? What exactly was I photographing?
Thanks Sal...I agree...I am amazed at the incredible action shots submitted by others. I wouldn't vote for this one and Im the photographer. However there is action and the young lady here was enjoying it. After her wipe out she came up with a great big smile. Evidently she was pleased with the level of action. FYI I have that photo too .
Thanks, Cshults. This is definitely one of my favorites. I've been getting great feedback from several places. I have an equally stunning shot of a hummingbird in my Wildlife gallery if you'd like to check it out: jmartinharris.com/#/gallery/wildlife/hbird1-11x14-1-of-1/
Thanks.
Jim
I understand what you are talking about...... "True critisim", and "reality". None of us know how much a person put into the photo, or how far they travelled to get the shot, without actually being there ourselves. Some people are lucky enough to have perfect natural art to photograph in thier own back yards. Some of us have to travel hundreds, or thousands of miles to find what we hold dear to our camera. I have also had "bad critisim" on my photo. The art of photography is in the eye of the person looking at it. We all like different things. That is why they call it "Art" Even though I am a woman... I do not find anything offensive by this photo. I see the clarity of the waves, and the entire photo, and wished I could have been there myself.
I suppose I'm being over sensitive. That's my nature. Less than perfect photos, less than perfect personality. There is a difference between true criticism and dealing with reality though. Perfect exposure is relative, NO ONE poses a subject for an action shot. I can't imagine calling out to a 12 year old girl who is about to fall off her surf board,"SMILE" I see only one problem with this photo; It is only half as good as the many spectacular action photos submitted. I won't even vote for my own work because so many others are just so superior to mine.
Nice shot!! You don't have to defend your work . Not everyone is going to like it. I have had my website up and running for 3 years now. I average 7000 hits a month and sell many photos because of it. I receive at least a 50 emails daily from people who have visited my website . I try to please the people that purchase my images, the big companies, they are what matters if you want to make $ in this business. What negative comments coming from contests like this shouldn't even matter. If your stuff is good it will sell its self. These photographers in contests like this aren't looking to buy from each other. They are looking to one up the other guy and win that so called HUGE monthly prize(gift certificate) instead of using their energy to sell there work in a profitable manner .
Nice shot! Its great to see an actual photo-- not a bunch of photoshopped images competing ,like last month. These photo contests seem to turn into a photoshopped image contest not an actual image shot with a camera.Where the photographer actually sets up his/her equipment and takes the time to get the perfect shot in the field instead of doing it at home behind a computer. Some may think that capturing a shot of a waterfall isn't an action. what's the difference between stopping the action of water or stopping the action of a boxer, horse, surfer etc
I do a lot of horse action photography as well. Most of it is in less than adequate lighting situations, like this one. I love this photo. I bet that girl's leg was hurting after this crash. I can also see where someone who only shoots in a studio, with controlled lighting, and poses would think this had bad angles. I will give it 5 stars.
Good grief - arent we all being a bit sensitive? If everyone just says great shot what good is having comments? Some images will appeal to one and not another. Take the criticism and use it your benefit or not - entirely up to you. Oh and great shot
I'm not one to argue... but Do not appreciate when ppl hide behind "guest" on here with "not very nice comments"!
I'm not sure how you can call this soft, when you can see every little scar on the horses hind end, and EVERY spec of dirt flying. I didn't photoshop much like others do. This is just about how it came out of the camera.... Not hiding behind smoke and mirrors. Like I said in an earlier post..... The 16x20 came out crisp clear & awesome!!!!! When you are shooting photos of horses & cows, that are ALL OVER the arena running wide open, you can not pick the angles. Also like I said in an earlier post.....The people that compete in these events. LOVE THIS ANGLE!
But you are entitled to your opionion.
If the girl was wearing a thong the shot would be incredible. (But I wouldn't have posted it). If the waves were in Hawaii and were 40 feet the shot would be better. If I were not blind in one eye I would have noticed it was slightly overexposed.(I rely on my meters) If a shark were attacking at the time of the shot maybe she would have faced the camera. (just bad luck)
If the shark had eaten half of her the shot would go national possible world wide. (glad that didn't happen) Sir guest You are an idiot...get a life.
I agree that the photograph is very good, but I really don't think it matches the contest theme. The theme is "Action photography" and this is more a landscape shot. Yes it has water movement, but that isn't really "Action Photography" It is a very good photo though.
If the girl was facing the camera, the shot would be better, but still just average I think. It is slightly underexposed, and could use some post process work.
This is a much, much better photograph than the other Rodeo shot in the contest. This photo captures the mood well. Very artistically done, good post process work.
A decent shot. Some noise is visible, and the overall image quality is soft. The angle of the shot isn't the best either, but that's not really in your control.
